Get Hired NOW! Q & A

Why is it so difficult for people to find a job today?
The alarming fact is that most people were never taught how to look for work. They may learn how to interview or write their resume, both useful skills, but never learned the actual job search process. They spend most, if not all, of their time looking for advertised jobs in the want ads or on the Internet - the most ineffective and frustrating method.

What does every job-seeker need to know to increase their odds of finding the job they want?
There are three critical things every job seeker needs to know:
  1. Nearly 85% of all jobs are never advertised.
  2. 73% find work through methods other than applying for advertised jobs.
  3. Only 2-4% of job-seekers land a job through Internet job boards.
It's no wonder that job-seekers spend many months on their job search, or become so frustrated that they give up looking for work. They are looking in all the wrong places.

What's the biggest mistake job-seekers make?
They treat their job search like a direct-mail advertising campaign. They expect great response from blindly sending out hundreds of resumes. They wait by the phone and it never rings. They sit at their computer and never get a response.

Reports say that competition for jobs is fierce. How can job-seekers stand out from the crowd in such a competitive market?
There are three distinct ways to stand out from your competition during the job hunt:
  1. You're known as a problem solver
  2. You fit in with the company culture
  3. You bring value to the relationship

How can job-seekers stay motivated when they face rejection and frustration every single day?
First, stay accountable. Have someone ask you once or twice a week what you have done and what is next. Second, get another perspective. It's great to get a different point of view from someone who can help you find a solution. Third, seek support. It is very helpful to have someone else to complain to or celebrate out loud with - someone who cares about your progress. It may be all you need to get back into action.

What is the best way for someone currently employed to change his or her job or career?
Develop a career network. Attend networking events, seminars, or workshops where you can meet new people in your current industry or a new one. Go to lunch with new people at a company or industry in which you would like to work. Continue to build this community of people from which you find out about open positions, companies needing your expertise, and influential people who can facilitate your job search. It's easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day grind of work that it becomes an afterthought to create new relationships.

The "Baby-Boomer" population, people in their 40's and 50's, are finding it increasingly difficult to land a job. Why is it so difficult for them and what advice would you give?
Some companies feel they can get the same value and expertise for a lower price. They also assume that mature workers won't stay long in the job and once hired, they will be looking again soon. One way to deal with this issue is for the job seeker to address these two issues right up front within the interview.

Many people feel that asking for help during their job search is like asking for charity. How do they ask their personal connections for help without sounding desperate?
While growing up, many of us were taught to fend for ourselves. So now, when we need the help most, asking for it just doesn't feel right. Here's the secret - most everyone is ready, willing, and able to help you. All you have to do is ask. It's in our nature to help people out. The funny thing is that we feel just as awkward offering to help someone as we do asking for it.
